Three-Day Legacy Project Benefits CORA
In honor of Hunger Action Month, Chatham OutReach Alliance (CORA) is hosting a three-day service project on September 7th, 8th, and 9th. Thanks to the inspiration and partnership with ML 23 CLT, a volunteer group working with Gratitude Training that is dedicated to building better communities, CORA is going to be buzzing with lots of activity the second weekend in September with their Legacy Project. This three-part project includes a community wide food drive, a CORA facility and grounds refurbishing project, and a Chatham OutReach Alliance community day with tours, educational presentations, and volunteer projects.
Johnson's families receive final payment from Mountaire
The 28 families from Johnson's Mobile Home Park moved out by the agreed deadline of July 31 and received their final compensation from Mountaire Farms.
Tuesday, July 31, was the last day for Johnson's Mobile Home Park in Siler City that was home for over 60 adults and 50 children, the majority of whom were Hispanic. Mountaire Farms evicted the 28 families after purchasing the property to expand their new chicken processing plant. Twenty-seven of the 28 families owned their mobile homes. All the residents moved out by the agreed deadline of July 31 and recently received their final compensation check.
Twenty-one families found places to live in Chatham County, seven moved to Randolph County. Three families moved their mobile homes, seven purchased used mobile homes, one purchased a home, and 17 are renting houses or mobile homes.
Since August 2017, The Hispanic Liaison hosted dozens of meetings with the Hispanic residents to help them articulate their needs, understand their rights, and negotiate with Mountaire Farms for compensation for their losses and relocation expenses. In March, following public meetings with town and county commissioners, the residents secured a settlement that included 9 months of rent abatement, an extended move out date to July 31 (the original eviction date was May 7), and $8,300 in financial compensation, totaling $10,190 in benefit to each of the 28 families.
Jorge, a resident and father of four said, "I'm grateful to The Hispanic Liaison for helping us come together as a community. By standing united, we were able to face a powerful corporation and secure a fair compensation for our families. This was a great example for our children that we can and should stand up for our rights."
Ilana Dubester, Executive Director of The Hispanic Liaison stated, "We are honored to have stood with the residents to seek a just compensation for their losses. They stood united for over 8 months and it took a lot of courage and tenacity to face a multi-million dollar corporation. This agreement was only possible because of their resolve to organize and the company's willingness to negotiate."
With financial support from Chatham County, The Hispanic Liaison was able to help the families look for housing, advise on rental and purchase contracts, secure permits for moving mobile homes, organize volunteers to help residents move and more. The Liaison was also responsible for disbursing the checks to each family, which were issued in three installments.

Food Lion Feeds gift to FUEL UP for Chatham Middle School
Siler City First United Methodist Church FUEL UP for Chatham Middle School has received $2700 from the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation just in time to help feed local residents. SCFUMC FUEL UP volunteers will use this gift to purchase nutritional foods for the 2018-19 school year. Bags of groceries are sent home to supplement weekend meals for families whose children receive free meals during the school week. Bags are also made available during Family emergencies. Hunger is a serious problem for growing young teenagers. One in fourteen children in Chatham County is at risk for hunger.
Services at Chatham Middle
At Chatham Middle, 88 percent of the families qualify for free or reduced meals. With assistance from Food Lion Feeds, the NC Interfaith Food Shuttle, and church fundraisers and donations, 80 families will receive weekly bags in 2018. This is still a small fraction of the families who qualify for assistance, however.. In the past school year, 22,000 pounds of food were purchased, packed, delivered, and distributed by church and school volunteers. Siler City Food Lion is a significant partner in fighting hunger in Chatham County. In addition to supporting FUEL UP for Chatham Middle they are consistent donors to the West Chatham Food Pantry and Cooking Matters for Teens, an after-school cooking class provided in partnership with The Interfaith Food Shuttle and Communities in Schools which teaches middle school students how to choose, purchase, cook and enjoy nutritional meals.
Siler City First United Methodist Church FUEL UP
FUEL UP is a cooperative effort with Communities in Schools Chatham and the Chatham Middle School staff and students. Tych Cowdin, Student Support Specialist for Communities in Schools at Chatham Middle talks about FUEL UP:. "The program serves some of the most vulnerable youth and families in the county. Having the CMS Student Ambassadors distribute the food bags once they have been delivered by FUMC Volunteers has been a HUGE help! These students always make sure their classmates get what they need. There is a great deal of pride and service experienced through this opportunity."
Food Lion Feeds and FUEL UP
Established in 2001, the Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation provides financial support for programs and organizations dedicated to feeding the hungry in the communities it serves. Since its inception, the foundation has awarded more than $10 million in grants.
"Food Lion Feeds Foundation's gift," said Jane Butler, Siler City First United Methodist Church Lead Volunteer, "allows FUEL UP to purchase fresh produce as well as staples for meals and healthy snacks. Siler City Food Lion managers and staff are efficient, friendly, and helpful FUEL UP partners in our choosing and ordering the best buys. They are great at letting us know when large orders of fresh affordable fruits will be available."
Galloway Ridge Residents Host "Growing Together"
The Board & Staff of the Boys & Girls Club of Siler City approached the Community Engagement Committee of Galloway Ridge to provide a summer camp program for select Boys & Girls Club campers. The program stage at Galloway Ridge included games. Cooking instruction, lunch preparation, history of Jordan Lake, an artwork project, pinewood derby car decoration, swimming, visit to Fearrington herd, ice cream at the Granary, dinner at Ebenezer pavilion at Jordan Lake and a boat ride provided by Capt. Don Watkins.
Some 36 campers enjoyed the experience over 3 weeks and wrapped up with a reception at Galloway to include a display of the artwork project. Pack 924 and pack 942 provided their pinewood derby race track so the campers could see how fast their cars were. Six campers prepared special poster size "Thank You" notes to the residents expressing their enjoyment of their experience.

The Gratitude Legacy Project Team, part of Gratitude Training in Mooresville, NC, stands for a world that is peaceful, unified, abundant, loving, sustainable, where everyone gets that they matter. With that vision, our team of 18 has organized a food drive and fundraiser that will benefit the CORA Food Pantry. In addition to collecting food to fill the shelves of the pantry with food, we are giving the Pantry facilities a much-needed face-lift including painting, deep cleaning and reorganization, landscaping, preparing the community garden for fall, and building a food waste receiving bin. This work will take place over the September 7-9, 2018 weekend.
Our goal is to raise $5000 to purchase the necessary supplies for the renovations and to fill birthday bags for the Pantry's "Birthday Closet." Any additional funds raised will go towards purchasing food for the Pantry. For details, see our GoFundMe Legacy Project Video: GoFundMe Legacy Project
Also, on Sunday, September 9 from 1 - 4 p.m., we are hosting an fun and educational Open House at the CORA Food Pantry. There will be presentations on: gardening 101, basics in composting, recycling, and reducing food waste. Fun activities for kids are also planned. Learn Local Government in Chatham's Citizens' College
Do you want to know more about the Chatham County community you live or work in? Especially how its local governments work to carry out important services and programs? Would you like to earn continuing education credits in the process?
Anyone interested in learning more about county and town government is invited to enroll in Chatham County Citizens' College, offered through Central Carolina Community College's Continuing Education Program in Pittsboro. The course is jointly offered by CCCC-Pittsboro and the Chatham County Manager's Office at a very low cost of $25.
Citizens' College begins on Sept. 20, 2018 and will be offered every Thursday night until Nov. 1, 2018 from 6:30 to 8:45 p.m. Locations will vary across the county, but will include the Justice Center, Historic Courthouse, North Chatham Fire Station and Jordan Lake Water Treatment Plant.
The main goals are to help participants better understand how major county and town services operate and who manages them; explore options for serving as volunteers to help local governments; get to know key managers and department heads; and interact with other interested residents of all ages and backgrounds.
Topics covered will include county/town administration, elections, water utilities, waste cooperative extension, emergency operations, fire services, law enforcement, planning, court system and education.
TO REGISTER: Interested people may register for the class by phone or to request a printed form, contact CCCC’s Continuing Education Office at 919.545.8044. This is the only place to register.
Friends Fall Book Sale at the Chatham Community Library
The Friends of the Chatham Community Library (FotCCL) will hold its Fall Book Sale September 27, 28 and 29 at the library on the campus of Central Carolina Community College in Pittsboro.
Hours of the sale are Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
More than 18,000 hardbound and softbound books, audio books and more will be available for purchase. Audio-visual items such as DVDs, CDs, LPs and audio books will also be offered. Each sale offers a completely new assortment of titles in very good to excellent condition, and all are organized by category, subject or format.
Admission is free and there is plenty of free parking and volunteers to assist with carrying out and loading books.
On Thursday, the first day of the sale, purchases of $200 or more are entitled to a 20 per cent discount; on Friday, all books and materials are half price; and on Saturday, customers may fill grocery bags (or their own) with books and other materials for $5 each, with no limit to the number of bags they fill. Bags are available free, compliments of local food stores.
Cash, checks and now major credit cards are accepted at the FotCCL book sales. Members of the Friends of the Chatham Community Library receive discount cards worth $3 each, including all those who join at the book sale. This discount may also be used on any day of the sale.
Regular offerings include huge assortments of general history, Civil War, World Wars I and II, biographies, classic novels, cookbooks, art books (such as antiques, architecture, film, painting, photography, etc.), philosophy, religion, humor, children’s books, reference, self-help and more.
For this sale, the Friends has received excellent collections of literary criticism; Japanese and Chinese history, culture and literature; Cold War, spies and Cuba; and all-things North Carolina. There are also nice collections about rock climbing, stained glass, bead making and Portuguese and Chinese medicine.
Proceeds from the book sale are used to benefit the library for underwriting various programs; purchasing needed books, materials and equipment; and improving its technology and services.
The Chatham Community Library is located at 197 NC Highway 87 in Pittsboro, about a half mile north of US Highway 64 Business (West Street).
This year, the Friends is celebrating its 50th anniversary. The organization was founded on October 3, 1968. More information about the book sale, including membership in the Friends and volunteer opportunities, may be found on the FotCCL Website at www.friendsccl.org.
How Diverting Taxpayer Dollars for Charter Schools Hurts Public Education
The Public Education Action Team of the League of Women Voters of Orange, Durham and Chatham counties invites the public to a free screening of "Backpack Full of Cash." The film looks at the impact on several public school systems that have been affected by loss of funds to charter schools and vouchers for private schools. These policies have been implemented in North Carolina. The screening will be held on Thursday, September 13, 2018, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Durham Technical Community College, Educational Resources Center, Room 5-100 Building 5, located at 1637 E. Lawson Street, Durham.
North Carolina continues to direct increasing amounts of public funds to charter and private schools, via vouchers, while still not fully funding traditional public schools and related services. This impacts all of us, whether or not we have school age children -- a strong public education system benefits all community members.
LWV believes that an informed public is better able to make appropriate selections for their children and community, provide input to elected officials, and make educated choices in the voting booth. A question and answer session, immediately following the film, will be moderated by Yevonne Brannon of Public Schools First, featuring Durham School Board member Natalie Beyer and former Durham Superintendent of Schools Bert L'Homme.
This screening is jointly sponsored by: Public Schools First, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and NC Council of Churches. This event is free and open to the public. Free parking is available.
