Mayor Pete: Quit Scapegoating African-American Voters
By: James Neal

Last week a focus group survey of black voters commissioned by the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign was leaked to McClatchy. The findings from the Buttigieg survey blamed his dismal standing with black voters on homophobia. To suggest that black voters are more biasedin some binary, intrinsic way against gay candidates than other cohorts is to exploit a racist stereotype.Instead of focusing on his total disconnect with a foundational constituency in the Democratic Party the mayor opted to blame homophobia instead of looking inward at why he remains unpopular amongst or unknown to black voters. His trafficking in an ugly trope is insulting and it’s dead wrong. I know, firsthand. Not from a McKinsey-likefocus group but from experience as a white-privileged, openly-gay man running for the US Senate in North Carolina 12 years ago.
