Shock and Ahhhhh….yes, seriously!

by Dr. Jenni Sherwood, Chiropractic Physician

Have you ever heard of SHOCKWAVE Therapy? Well, it is an amazing new therapy that we are offering our patients at Carolina Spine Specialists. Come find out if it is right for you!

I frequently hear my patient’s express frustration over the fact that CHRONIC pain is causing them to miss out on things that they love to do in life. Whether that be golfing or playing tennis, playing with grandchildren, traveling to see family or simply sitting at a desk working at a computer all day. Living with pain limits your mobility and reduces your flexibility, strength, and endurance. Pain decreases your quality of life making it challenging to get through daily tasks and activities. One of the most common pleas I hear is, “I just want my life back.” As a chiropractor, I do my best with the tools that I have to make a change. The Piezo Shockwave is making a huge difference in turning chronic problems around and allowing people to get back to doing the things they love.

At a recent chiropractic conference, I was introduced to one of the new ‘groundbreaking’ therapies to hit the market, the Piezo MyACT Shockwave. Claims that it ‘Dramatically Reduced’ or ‘Eliminated Chronic Pain’ were made and that REALLY peaked my interest. What makes this unique is that it is one of the very few technologies in any field of medicine that seems to work well when an injury reaches the chronic, non-healing state. The Piezo Shockwave therapy can actually break down scar tissue and Knots or Adhesions in muscle tissue and allow it to heal and repair itself. It is like melting the problems spots away.

What is Piezo ACT SHOCKWAVE THERAPY?

It’s a revolutionary new pain relieving therapy that offers a highly effective alternative to surgery and injections for the following conditions:

  • TMJ dysfunction
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Trigger Points
  • Scar Tissue
  • Shoulder Pain
  • Knee Pain
  • Neck Pain
  • Back Pain

Ok, so it treats all those things, but what exactly is it?

Piezo MyACT (Myofacial Acoustic Compression Therapy) delivers thousands of high energy shock waves to the affected tissue in the region of treatment, typically “the painful area.” The pressure pulses break down scar tissue, adhesions and calcifications while stimulating cellular metabolism, enhancing blood circulation, and enabling damaged tissue to regenerate. Piezo Wave therapy is also effective in cases of chronic pain when the body has demonstrated a previous inability to heal completely by itself. In addition to stimulating the healing process, shockwave therapy may have a direct effect on nerves, diminishing pain.

When Will I See Results?

In most cases, right away. I needed to hear from my own patients if this therapy lived up to the hype. We recently held a Piezo Demonstration in our Chapel Hill location with 35 patients taking part. The feedback following the treatment was that 94% of our patients experienced a significant decrease in their pain levels on their first treatment!

We treated a variety of conditions that day including Neck pain, TMJ dysfunction, Trigger points, Tennis Elbow, Hip pain, Plantar fasciitis, Sciatica and Low back pain, 33 out of 35 patients were incredibly enthusiastic and the two who were on the fence were still open to continue treatment.

The treatments take 5-10 minutes. Between treatments, patients are able to perform all normal daily activities. Most patients report immediate pain relief but the healing response usually requires 6-8 weeks.
